Ottawa’s Gallery 101 is about to move to Catherine Street.
The announcement of the move in the new year was made Thursday afternoon in a media release. The gallery is changing locations because its current home at 51 B Young St. is about to be demolished by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.
The move is “bittersweet,” the gallery said in the media release.
“After three years …, we have come to love this light industrial space, the neighbourhood and our neighbours at Platform Gallery and Studios and Soulard Multi Service who must also relocate. This is the nature of the current building climate that we live in.”
The gallery said that this will be the sixth time it has moved since its founding in the 1980s. They will be relocating to 280 Catherine St., across the street from the Ottawa bus station. The space is larger and encompasses two floors.
More room means more staff, the gallery says.
“We have plans to increase our staff from two to four and our new venue will allow for different kinds of programming with an extra gallery space and permanent workshop.”
Gallery 101 will hold its first opening March 1, the release said.
