First-time Ottawa artist honoured by animation festival

Ottawa animator Valerie Barnhart has only made one animated film. But first time lucky.

She picked up an honourable mention in the competition for the Best Canadian Animation award at this year’s Ottawa International Animation Festival. And she won the Vimeo Staff Pick Award.

Her win for the film Girl in the Hallway was announced Saturday evening. The winner of the Canadian Film Institute (CFI) Award is the Bulgarian-Canadian animator Theodore Ushev, who won for his film The Physics of Sorrow.

The 2019 animation festival received 2,424 entries from 93 countries and selected 117 for competition.

The Nelvana Grand Prize for Independent Short — Don’t Know What, directed by Thomas Renolder.
