Sobey Art Award long list revealed

A long list of 25 artists from five regions of Canada will be considered for the 2018 Sobey Art Award. 

The winner of the award, which goes to an emerging Canadian artist, will receive $100,000 from the Sobey Art Foundation. Four other shortlisted artists will get $25,000 each. The other 20 long-listed artists get $2,000 each. In addition, for the first time, three nominees from the long list will take part in national and international art residencies funded by the Sobey Art Foundation and the Donald R. Sobey Foundation.

The short list will be announced May 29 and the winner will be announced at the National Gallery of Canada Nov. 14. The work of the five finalists will be featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery from Oct. 3 to Feb. 10, 2019. Past winners include Jeremy Shaw, Brian Jungen, Jean-Pierre Gauthier, Annie Pootoogook, Michel de Broin, Tim Lee, David Altmejd, Daniel Barrow, Daniel Young and Christian Giroux, Raphaëlle de Groot, Duane Linklater, Nadia Myre, and Abbas Akhavan. The 2017 winner was Ursula Johnson.
